Accurate Results Gluten Intolerance blood tests?

by Stephanie
(Auckland)

Hi there :) earlier this year i took myself off gluten after matching my symptom's to a Gluten Intolerance, now I'm looking to have this confirmed via a blood test and possibly a biopsy, my question is should i go back to eating gluten foods before the test so it wont be in vain? or will the test find out without having to eat gluten and make my self ill by doing so, any help / advice would be wonderful as the lab, doc, and nurse i've talked to don't know! Cheers

Negative Coeliac Test - Positive for DQ8
by: Anonymous

My son has had a negative result for the Coeliac Test, through sheer instance that he was intolerant to gluten that the paeditrican did the genetic blood test which came up positive for DQ8.

We are now back on gluten to have the endoscopy done to see if he is a Coeliac. Will be insterested to see if he is a Coeliac or not.

tests not everything
by: Anonymous

1) the celiac test is not 100% accurate - it's 100% specific - so if it comes up positive you have celiac - but many people do not test positive in the first place - at least 20% of people test negative even when their villae are demonstrably damaged, so, like my kids you might be going through all the stress of eating all that bread for no result except a worsening of your health.

2) you can do a skin prick test - but as far as I'm aware that's only allergy and celiac is slightly different.

3) There are some other tests - but they're not that easily available, there's a test where they check for a specific immune response to gluten and there's also the genetic test - most peole with bad reactions to gluten have either DQ2 or DQ8. This is an expensive test and I believe you actually have to go to the lab to get it done - but I do know of one person who was diagnosed on that result alone.

How interesting
by: Lesley

I also havent been tested yet although since giving up gluten I find I have severe reactions to it when I eat it. In fact the moment my tongue touches anything with gluten it starts to dry out instantly and tingle. My mouth also cracks.

I didnt get tested because I heard you had to eat wheat for 3 weeks prior and I would certainly be very very ill if I did that.

I have some other digestive problems that have cropped up also. When I drink wine it agitates what I can only imagine is a section of my colon. It feels like a burning ulcer.

I would be interested in your test results without wheat.

Blood Testing
by: Anonymous

Hi There. Yes I have heard that it doesnt matter too much if you are gluten free, the test would still be accurate. If you do manage to get your GP to oder the blood test, could you let me know who your GP is I cant find any one in Hamilton who will request the test. So would be keen to try and see someone in Auckland.

gf and testing
by: Gfk

Hi,

I found I had been on an almost completely gluten free diet for a few months before I got my tests done, and I still had a high IGg result.

So while it can reduce your amount, I think you should still see some sort of reaction since you are off it.

Dr Rodney Ford tested me and said it was fine - you need to make sure you are not on any antihistamines prior to testing as they can effect skin prick test results.
