Are Oats Gluten Free? Oats are gluten free but they are often milled on production lines which also handle gluten containing cereals like barley, malt or wheat.
This can cause cross contamination which is why there is a lot of debate around the topic of oats being gluten free.
Some growers are dedicating fields and equipment to producing oats alone. It has finally become possible to obtain pure oats, free of cross-contamination, from specialized vendors. Your best bet is to read the packaging.
It really depends on the brand that you are eating and your sensitivity to gluten. Living in New Zealand I have found portion sizes and the milling process and the brand of oats makes a huge difference
I must add that I am Gluten Intolerant so my reaction may be different to those with celiac disease.
Oats themselves do not contain gluten so they MAY be fine for your gluten diet assuming they are not cross contaminated. (Celiacs should proceed with care and do their research to find out if oats are right for them).
