Are there other things when you cant eat Gluten?

by Lesley
(Wellington)

Im so fed up with this Gluten Free deal. I have other things that go wrong also. I cant even drink wine now as I am finding that all sugars are beginning to affect me and I have a pain in my stomach like a burning in a localised area when I have a glass of wine or pretty much any food.

I kind of self diagnosed Candida as being a possible cause and went to see the doctor to get some sort of answer. The doctor was @$%% useless and did not seem to understand what it was to have systemic symptoms but merely gave me antacid and ordered the same blood tests I had last year that showed nothing.

She could not even do a Celiac test because I do not eat gluten. I feel I have nowhere to go.

Does anyone see a natural therapist and what results have you had?

Update
by: Lesley

Hi

Thanks for your help. Just to give you an update I have been to see Will Aitken (who by the way also practices at Manuka Health as well as his own place in Wellington)

He did some allergy testing for me yesterday. I have no idea how he does it but I do have faith in him.

He has worked out Im not only gluten intolerant, but also starch intolerant and sugar intolerant.

So now I have cut out rice, root vegetables, potato and corn from my diet. I cant have any gluten free brekky cereals either

He tells me lentils are nice....Its all I have left. Food is no fun LOL

gluten and wine issues
by: Anna

Hi Lesley - I know someone else has mentioned this, but I suggest you look into the sulphites suggestion. Sulphites are listed on foods as an ingredient numbers 220-230 (so 220, 221, 222, 223, etc). They are used as a preservative in wine, many dried fruits (particularly apricots, but not prunes), some fruit juices, preserved lemon and lime juice, in icing sugar, on balsamic and wine vinegars, in pickles and chutneys, in commercially smoked fish ... the list goes on. You can Google for more complete lists. It is also used in preparing some flours - to help bleach it. All this means it is very hard to pick, and it's not always declared because it is sometimes a process (as with the flour and smoked fish). Although I went wheat free, I kept on having unexplained symptoms, until I realised it was the sulphites as well as wheat that made me sick. It's an enormous pain, because it's almost always not the food itself that's a problem, but the preservative treatment it's had. Very frustrating!
I hope this might help you. Best of luck.

Thank you!

Thanks so much for that referral!. I went to the doctor and asked to be tested for Candida but all I got was "I dont know anything about that so I cant test it" and a bottle of Losec.

I now have ulcers apparently, and Im on 2 Losec a day to stop the acid rising up my throat. Its getting worse by the day.

I have continued to eat gluten free. In fact I mainly only eat salad and cottage cheese and salmon because its safe. If I step outside that I get huge acid problems.

Interestingly last year I saw Will Aitken who works from Manuka Health also. I will follow up your suggestion and let you know how I got on.

I've been down that road...

Sounds like you went through a similar thing to me and agreed it is not fun. I highly recommend Manuka health centre in Petone (Dr Mark Austin) - he has helped me work through diet issues in addition to coeliac and helped to identify and cure a candida blood infection.

good luck!

Thanks for your reply

Thanks Lucy

Boy you have it much worse than me right now. I have a lot of fluid retention and have done for years but its all come to a head.

I can tell you Im so sick of doctors. It took them about 6 years to diagnose Hypothyroidism despite me constantly showing the symptoms. I was half dead with a rotting gallbladder before they discovered it and stopped telling me I had acid reflux, and had to have emergency surgery. I just dont think doctors see the relevance of the body being a system. Last year I had adrenal fatigue and ended up with a wonderful Kinesiologist, Will Aitken who got me sorted out.

I will see him first, and then call your guy. I wont be seeing any flippin doctors!!!

Gluten Allergies and Other Sensitivies
by: Lucy The Gluten Free Kiwi

Hey Lesley - Your comments really ring true to me - I think you are me 3 years ago with regard to gluten and allergies.

I to struggled to get a DR who had any knowledge about food allergies - It turns out not everyone believes you are what you eat.

Anyway with regards to wine - some cheaper wineries use wheat to create a water tight seal when placing the top on their wine barrels - this can cause allergies.

Secondly - sulphites in wine (along with dried fruits and cured meats) can cause allergies, they tend to make me itch like mad and cause eczema.

I recently contacted The Herb Center in Christchurch as my skin has been so bad that it falls off like snow and leaves me red and raw and she has put me on a detox for 2 weeks with some microbial herbs to help clean any toxins, worms or parasites out and spring clean my immune system. Apparently this can help and kill off the candidiasis.

I think the thing is to remember your body is trying to tell you something when it rejects gluten and other foods - that is wants more natural unprocessed foods. Although I know sometimes I want it to SHUTUP.

I am gluten intolerant, sensitive to dairy, have oral allergy syndrome (allergic to stone fruits and most raw fruits and raw potatoes), I am also allergic to rye grass, dust mites.

I have managed to cut down on sugar and sulphites - my new vice is dark chocolate and frozen berries.

It does get annoying but if all it takes is some dietary changes to feel better - it has to be worth it - currently I am taking the approach of a caveman - would a cave man eat this - if its raw unprocessed fruit and high protein then chances are he would.

If you are suffering from candida have you considered a pro - biotic? If you want to talk to someone regarding nutritional supplements for gluten free people you can call this 0800 number free in New Zealand 0800 000 980 - and talk to a Pharmacist with a post graduate degree in nutritional and environmental medicine they are the ones who diagnosed me :)
