Constipation and Gluten Free Diet

by Charlotte Bennett
(Rocky Point, NC)

Since I have been on a gluten free diet, I am having a constipation problem. I have never been bothered with this problem before, and nothing I seen to do helps.

What do I need to add to my diet. I am allergic to psylium, and fiber pills just give me gas.

Prunes
by: Anonymous

Three of our family are gluten free. We don't usually have problems with constipation. I have added buckwheat to our GF home made bread which helps and plenty of fruit. However we did go through a patch last year where my son was suffering from constipation. After trying chemical laxatives which didn't work and I went back to the old standby for this problem - prunes. He has two prunes a day in his lunch and no problems since.

gluten free and fibre
by: Gluten Free Kiwi

Hi Charlotte,

This is an issue many of us stumble across when going gluten free. I found that most "gluten free" products at the supermarket generally lack fibre and are packed with sugar so I try and eat foods that are naturally gluten free rather then packaged foods.

e.g. if im baking I add coconut or LSA for fibre.

When i make a salad I use chickpeas in it.

When i cook a pasta I add a can of beans for fibre.

Almond meal can be great for baking also.

I try an eat unprocessed foods where possible like brown rice and potatoes rather then breads and biscuits.

I really like to use beans, quinoa and chickpeas in my cooking now that I am gluten free, it has really opened up a whole new world of ingredients for me.
