Emigrating to NZ from UK with my 7year old Coeliac daughter

by Sally Tabram
(Rutland UK)

Can anyone help me and outline how easy it is in NZ to live day to day as a coeliac?

You know the stuff like bread, pasta, biccies etc.

Over here we're lucky enough to get bread on prescription that is fresh and really tasty.

Any help muchly appreciated! Thanks

Welcome to New Zealand
by: Mary

New Zealand is great for gf food and improving all the time. Over the last four years (since I was diagnosed as a coeliac) I have been able to move from speciality shops to mainstream supermarkets now for all my bread, pasta, etc.

Restaurants are also pretty good although you have to be eternally vigilant if, like me, you have a severe reaction to even a trace.

Hope you enjoy NZ our Supermarkets New World and Countdown/Woolworths are pretty they have improved a lot since I first started eating gluten free, bread is reasonably easy to get there is a bakey (Marx) in st heilers for bread, rolls, cakes etc. We now have gluten free pastry which is not bad by Pavillion. There are a lot more products available than there use to be.
Some are imported from Australia & UK.
We have some pretty good products made here now
Healthries is a good brand.
All the best JMH.

Gluten Free is easy
by: Phil

At least 5 bread manufacturers in Supermarkets and large Gluten Free sections in many. Best thing is fresh whole foods fruit and Vege. Eating out is easy GF burgers at Burger Fuel, Burger Wisconsin, Pizzas at Hell pizza and Dominos and many independent Pizzerias All supplied by Venerdi Ltd who supply Supermarkets and Organic shops with Certified Organic Gluten Free breads Pizzas Baps and Brownie. All Venerdi products are also Dairy and Soy free.

welcome to NZ!
by: Theresa

Hi,
I suggest you get in touch with the coeliac society of NZ [www.coeliac.co.nz], they should be able to give you more information about the specific area you'll be moving to and they are also great at giving out information and support.

You'll be able to find gluten free bread in most supermarkets and a lot of bakeries [although that might be contaminated] some of it might not be that great but we've got a few brands like Pavilion and Burgen which are quite good.
Most supermarkets will also have a small stash of gluten free foods, like pasta, but many normal items off the shelf also happen to be gluten free. Every supermarket is different though, because they taylor their stock to the community's needs. My supermarket has a huge gluten free section, I'm really blessed!

There are other shops, like The Binn Inn, which sell lots of specialty flours like sorghum, tapioca and millet.

I hope the move goes well and that you settle into NZ quickly :)
