Gluten allergy / intolerance testing

by Linda
(Auckland)

Hi all,

Gluten intolerance runs quite strongly in my family. My mother put me on a gluten free diet when i was kid. I've recently gone back on it and confirmed that yes ..... my mum was right. I actually do feel better not eating it!! I would however, just out of curiosity, like to have tests done to see if it's just an intolerance that's running in the family or whether we actually have an allergy.

I have so far not found a doctor that actually takes the condition seriously and is willing or open minded to go forth with any testing. Does anyone know of a doctor in the auckland region that specialises in food allergies?

I'd rather have the tests now while I've still got gluten in my system but just not sure what they entail or how to go about receiving them.

thanks :-)

Allergy Centre NEW
by: Sylvia

I don't know whether this will be of any help at all, because my memory is distinctly fuzzy. My daughter used to live in Sunnynook on the North Shore. En route from her place to the grandchildren's day care I used to drive past a newish building that advertised itself as an Allergy Centre, can't remember the exact name but I think it was on Sunset Road.

Naturopaths can help NEW
by: Tania

Hi

There is a new blood test on the market that you can do at home or the naturopath can do it for you.

It's from ANI Biotech - The Biocard Celiac Test is fast (5mins), easy to use and as accurate as the best pathology tests. The self-contained BCT is perfect for screening for CD as well as for monitoring diet compliance of CD sufferers. Specificity 93.5%
Sensitivity 96.7%

The test costs around $60 incl GST (Sorry, moving house so don't know where my price list is at the mo.) plus Practitioner Fee.

A biopsy is usually only required if you are suffering from malabsorption so the extent of it can be checked.

testing NEW
by: Theresa

Hi, I don't know any Dr's in the Auckland area, but you could just boss your Dr around like I do! [Dr's hate me]
I do however, know a bit about the testing. Unless you get a small bowel biopsy done privately you'll have to get blood tests done first. You have to be eating gluten [lots and lots of gluten] for about five weeks before the test to make sure that it will test positive if you're allergic. There are four available blood tests that your Dr can do but the main one that they look at is tTG - if it's high they say that you've probably got coeliacs. However, it's not conclusive so you'll have to go for a small bowel biopsy. [By the way, if ANY of your coeliac blood tests come back positive, get a biopsy done, it's worth it.]
Again, you have to eat lots of gluten in the weeks leading up to the endoscopy. It's hard, it's really, really hard. But it's so worth it.
Don't let the biopsy scare you, if you're getting put to sleep for it you'll be fine. It's actually quite fun - apart from the resulting gut ache - but hey, if you're coeliacs gut aches aren't new to you!
I really hope you sort your allergy out soon! I know how it feels, it's nice to know what you've got.
Hope that helped.
