Gluten free diet causing acne?

by Sarah
(Auckland)

I have been gluten free for 2 months and am having terrible skin reactions - acne on face and chest. I am 32 and i never get this type of acne when hormonal so am very confused! Is this normal?

Hormone Blood Tests NEW
by: Tania

Sheridan

I highly recommend seeing your GP and getting tests done. The ranges of normal within each test are actually quite small, however the tests need to be read as a group to see the true picture.

Prior to menopause, I used to have my hormone levels tested every 6 months due to PCOS/diabetes risk.

acne on chin and hairline on gluten free diet NEW
by: sheridan

me too. the skin on my chin feels like it's been burnt with boiling water. i have acne on my chin and right around my hair line - plus some on the scalp. i usually get one pimple a week prior to menstruation. nothing like this.

i don't reckon it's my body detoxing. i'm still eating sugar and drinking alcohol.

fatigue and bladder is what i went gluten free for. the bladder pain has absolutely been helped - almost pain free after 3 months - but the fatigue is the same.

i am wondering if the inflammation caused by gluten could disguise symptoms of something else. so now that's reduced a hidden hormone or other issue is showing symptoms. but what?

i've been told it's hard to measure hormone levels because the range of normal is so broad. so what next?

i'm going to introduce evening primrose oil to see if that makes a difference - three capsules a day.

Acne & Gluten-Free NEW
by: Tania

Hi Sarah

Your body is going through a detox phase as it adjusts to changing over to living gluten-free.

A couple of things that you may not be aware of is that ready bought gluten free foods tend to be higher in salt and sugars to make them "taste good", so have a look at the labels.

Any other questions, feel welcome to ask - I'm a coeliac and a naturopath.
