Gluten Free Prescription Price increase

by Susan
(New Zealand)

What on earth has happened to the prescription price of gluten free flour and pasta?

We had not ordered any for a year, and upon requesting a price list, was greeted with double the price, from $8 to $16 a 2kg bag of Holeys gluten free flour.

How on earth is a family of 3 gluten free people meant to survive? I thought this service was here to help us, not line the pockets of some government so called no it alls.

Any answers?

I then phoned Bakels direct and was able to buy the flour from them in Christchurch, this was cheaper, as we did not have to get the Doctor to sign any forms and get his money as well.
Would love to hear the thoughts of others who have in counted this.

Hi Sue,

I do not have any experience ordering gluten free products from but I do have a few cost cutting ones.

Find Rice noodles in the asian section of your supermarket - normally between 99cents and four dollars your can get a pack (enough for 4-5 people) the non branded ones seem to be cheaper.

San Remo have started producing a gluten free pasta that seems to be cheaper in the supermarkets.

With regard to flour - buying branded baking mixes can be expensive have you ever thought about mixing your own? sure the price of gf baking powder and gluten substitute might be a little higher - but the cost of rice, tapioca, corn, potato flour etc. is cheap at Asian supermarkets.

When I first went gluten free I also realized I could not handle as many starches in my body - I think it was trying to tell me something by giving me these allergies so I try and replace (where possible) Processed things like pasta and baking etc. with fresh whole foods - like vegetables, protein, eggs and so on.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Lucy Ross

Flour price NEW
by: Anonymous

That is just so crazy. What on earth is the health system doing?
Firstly one can stay heathly on a gluten free diet, the D.H.B should allow cheaper flour.
Do they want a number of people going of their diets and getting sick?
Why does it cost so much more in the North Island than the South?
Even just going to the supermarkets is cheaper than the D.H.B.
Something is wrong here. Too many pencil pushers who have no idea about a special needs diet.

Cheap Flour!!!!! NEW
by: Sylvia

You must live in the South Island with such cheap prices for your flour.

Consier yourself lucky. My last prescription for flour cost me $20 per 2k bag. It's only $25.00 in the supermarket and our DHB reckons that it would cost too much to put us on the same system as the South Islanders.
