Gluten Free Sunshine Coast: Gluten Free Across the Ditch:

Gluten Free New Zealand Gluten Free Travel  > Gluten Free Sunshine Coast

Sun, Surf, Sand, Tans... All things that spring to mind when we think of Australia...But now its time for another... Food... And more important Gluten Free Food on the sunshine coast.!

I am away on holiday... But still thinking about gluten free... I never get a holiday for my allergies! And here is my travels... as they happen! I will be updating this page every now and then! Hope you enjoy!

I will try and get some more photos up here when I get home!

A little background:

lucy the gluten free kiwiThis is my first trip to Australia since going gluten free... And I was more then a little nervous. I have emailed the local coeliac society & got a few insider tips from a forum I  have joined. I plan to do my own cooking most of the time, So At least I know I will not be short of gluten free products, as great companies like orgran, and freedom foods are based here.

Here for 9 days, flying in to Brisbane, staying in mooloolaba and exploring mooroochydor.

27/09/07: Christchurch ---> Brisbane---->Mooloolaba

Christchurch airport has proved terrible for sourcing food... I have been eating Pringles on my jetstar flights... only to develop a sore throat and itchy skin... I checked the label...which I had thought of doing earlier, only to find salt and Vinegar flavour contains wheat and malt...not the best start.

It obviously pays to bring your own food on board... I wish I had been more organized!

Brisbane Airport:
gluten free australiaFruit Salad was the only thing in sight. My sisters grabbed a pizza (who are still not Acknowledging that gluten effects them) And I will wait until the bus ride to mooloolaba.

And I must say Australia so far seems to be doing a great job (except for the airport) ! Since arriving in Mooloolaba around 8pm on the 27/09/07 Its been pretty good.

The hotel has informed us the smoke detectors are rather sensitive, so if we are cooking me must be cautious, as there is a fine if you set them off... so it looks like lots of salads, cold foods, platters, and possibly eating out!

28/09/2007: Mooloolaba & Maroochydore

It turns out we are still on New Zealand time, and since our meal last night, I think I have managed to convince my family that gluten does have an effect on them. So today we are all hunting for something gluten free for breakfast. Below the outrigger, there is a lovely Brassieres and Bar called cracked pepper... once I saw they had a few gluten free items on the menu... I was set.

After a great breakfast... A spot of whale watching, and a walk through the shops, it was off to the sunshine plaza on the bus. Where I found a few more G.F Spots

In The Supermarket I didn't even make it to the gf section, I was so happy with the fruit section, and the tropical fruits... it gave me an idea for a great platter.

28/09/2007: Mooloolaba

Well it turns out I am still on New Zealand Time... I think I have been awake since around 6.30am Aussie Time... And now at 11... it feels like I need a mid day siesta. I Started off the day with a fruit filled platter, passion fruit, pineapple, watermelon, strawberry's banana, and rock melon... along with a cup of green tea. Then it was time for a coffee

Grabbed myself a coffee, and noticed they had a selection of gluten free cookies, pre packaged, i assume they must buy them in... have not tried one yet, but they would be great for a snack if you had the gluten free munchies.

After wandering round in the sun on a cossie shopping mission, it was about time for brunch... and it was back to Cracked Pepper Brasserie and Bar - Read my Second Review... because we were so happy with it yesterday. My sister and I both ordered the Bacon and Eggs on gluten free toast... Just what the Dr Ordered. The toast was a little overcooked, but other then that great... and well priced!

Snack Time:

We went to Cole's for some snacks, Doritos White corn Dippa's and Hot Salsa (all appears to be g.f. on the label, but would pay to check this) Along with some Chunky dips tomatoes and basil pesto, and hummace. Then off to the beach!

All that swimming and sunning made me a tad thirsty... so I rinsed off the sand and tootled along to the Juice Bar Mooloolaba - Read My Review.

Then wandered some more!

Great Gluten Free Drink Idea

After a look around and sitting out in the sun, I decided its time for a little drink, so i poured myself a glass of Malibu soda and lime with a dash of pineapple... the perfect summery cocktail! And am currently drinking it while I type out my gluten free finds for the day.

A Questionably Gluten Free Dinner?

Had dinner at a place on the esplanade, I ordered a paella, but am not to sure if it was gluten free or not, because i was left feeling extremely bloated afterwards, but that could be blamed on the wine, or sorbet i sampled this evening as well... what ever it was it angered the tummy gods, and was not worth a review!

30/09/2007: Mooloolaba

Yet another sunny blue day, not a cloud in the sky, and the feel of sand in between my toes. After a walk along the beach in the early hours (I think I am still on Kiwi Time) I ventured to Jamaican Blue for a coffee.

Jamaican Blue Coffee - Read My Review.

My sister and I were sitting by the water drinking our coffee, when we spotted our Mother power walking down the beach, so we shouted her a coffee as well, them meandered back to the apartment.

Jamaican Blue Brunch - Read My Review

After a long brunch, and a sit overlooking the water, I headed back to write some reviews, and my family has popped down to the supermarket for some supplies.

I pretty munched worked all today, was not really up to much. We decided to head off to the Mooloolaba Seafood Festival, so went for a nice nighttime walk down the beach, has a look at all the choices... but decided it was safer for me to eat something back at home.

So it was of to the Thai Seasons - Read my review again for some prawns, and made a platter full of verge's,  fruit, corn chips and dip all in all a good meal, washed down with a glass of rose, enjoyed overlooking the beach on a balcony.

Dessert was a Life Savers Ice block... gluten free... full of food coloring so I could not sleep, but just what I needed to cool me down on an exceptionally warm night.

1/10/07 - Mooloolaba Marochydore

Grabbed myself some fresh banana and passion fruit this morning, then I was off to the gym for a workout before It got to hot. Opted for eating the left over chilli Thai rice noodles from last night after my work out, then it was off to the mall for another look around.

We were all ready for a brunch by the time we got to the mall (Sunshine Plaza Mooloolaba)... but I could not find anything well priced, so it was off to Banjo's bakery out the back of the mall, for cheap eggs and bacon, I figured I would order mine on hash browns instead of toast, but they did not have any. So I opted for a Strong coffee, and grabbed myself a gluten free macadamia and honey bar, and a sesame bar.

I have just been munching on corn chips and drip... but should really find a meal at some stage today... Its late now and I am STARVING. We are off for gluten free pizza and pasta tonight... which will be great.

Feel like I need something cool, to eat, but seeing as ice cream and I no longer get along, I opted for a juice based ice block. Tonight has been fairly inactive... good food thou

2/10/07 - Mooloolaba---> Alexandra Heads---> Cotton Tree

Actually manages to sleep in until a decent hour today, which was good as I have been a little grumpy of late. We decided we would walk down to Alexandra heads, and find somewhere to have lunch and coffee, so it was off down the beach.

After arriving at Alexandra heads, there was not a lot that tickled our fancy, we checked out a breakfast buffet, but I did not trust it and everything looks very shriveled, then bypassed McDonald's as I could not see anything I could eat... so we continued down the beach to Cotton Tree.

Cotton Tree was great, cafes everywhere, and had a beach Hippy vibe, so I knew I would find something to eat there. We walked past a organic cafe, which has gluten and dairy free fruit bread, and also offered gluten free sandwiches. Checked out a few cafes, but opted for Indulgence cafe on the corner, due to there being plenty of seating available, and eggs.

After our big walk down the beach in candles, we decided we better get a bus back. Then it was time for a cool drink and a snooze on the beach.

We grabbed a few snacky things at The Hog Bar and Grill by the Marina, curly Fries and Nachos, I am pretty sure the nachos were alright, but not to sure about the curly fries, they appeared to have some sort of crunchy coating.

I am really craving beer at the moment, its my first summer not drinking it, I find it when I drink it, I do not get any reaction until the next day, when my skin goes ruff, and I get VERY grumpy and moody... which is not fun for anyone! I have been on the hunt for gluten free beer as I know they make O'Brien's in Australia... But so far no luck!

Tonight we are doing a Twilight Cruise you can bring your own nibbles and B.Y.O and cruise round Mooloolaba Canals and River at dusk.

3/10/07  Mooloolaba ----> Caloundra----> Kawana

Struggled to sleep in today its been far to hot, and I was excited about doing some adventuring, we were off to Caloundra and Kuwana today for a look at the shops, and a look around. So after munching on some left over pieces of Gluten Free Pizza from last night We were off to the bus stop then on to Caloundra.

We were surprised to see so many cute shops there, and first stop was for a coffee, and a well deserved on at that. It was also great to see gluten free on offer at the first cafe we stopped at

Then it was time to hit the shops, plenty of cute shoes, dresses, sandals, and handbags, but I am finding it hard to get motivated about shopping, I just want to sprawl on the beach. My one complaint about this time is the lack of public toilets, I stopped a sign pointing to them up the road.... but there were no more signs, I did not know if I'd gone past them, was not far enough, after walking a few blocks I was rather infuriated.

On a finer note I found the Best Gluten Free Store for lunch... I have been walking past all the burger joints, and peoples bbq's craving a burger... but no one ever had gluten free bread until TODAY!

I also spotted a sign outside the Gelati place next store that mentioned there stuff was gluten free as well... so could be a good place to stop if you have enough room after you burger, or sandwich.

I was getting thirsty and sore feet after another look around, so it was off home, for a cool bottle of water, and a spot of swimming on the beach with my sister.

The weather has been really great over here, I love the beaches, and I am staying just down the road from one which is fantastic. The water is so much warmer then at home, great to sit around and soak up the atmosphere... and increase the freckle count!

Later in the afternoon  we realized we had not really brought any presents for anyone, so it was off the the sunshine plaza for a quick look around before it closed.

The food court closed at Sunshine Plaza around 4:30 on a Friday... which was not good for me as my gluten free options were running out, and I was getting moody because I had not eaten... So I did something very bad... I ate KFC... Pulled the bread out of the burger, I must say it does not even taste good anymore.

Remeber KFC IS NOT GLUTEN FREE... and now I remember why I do not eat it... I felt ill about 30 minutes after eating it, got a bloated bubbly tummy, sore throat.... and the itching started... I now have a lovely red rash all over my neck and shoulders... and can look forward to sporting it for another few days... Its given me a good reminder why I no longer eat gluten... a blast from the past... that can stay there as far as I am concerned.

So it was off home, for a grumpy, moody, night of reflux and upset tummy... Not my wisest idea.

04/10/07 Mooloolaba

Today we went out for brunch, before my sister left for New Zealand, It was off to Cracked Pepper for some gluten free goodies... But this time we were not so impressed.

Then it was off to the crazy discount bliss store for some supplies, great for making your own jewelry... Heaps of fun. We wandered the Streets and I actually found myself something to buy, so two Summer dresses later, and an empty wallet, it was back to the Resort from a break before we sent my sister off in the bus.

I noticed I am really grumpy, moody and snappy today, from eating wheat... I feel sorry for anyone who has to hang round me, and I will not be eating gluten Ever again!

My mother and sister were off for a look round, while I have been lounging and reading a magazine enjoying the last of my holiday. Catching up on this review, and sitting in the sun. And Now its time for Coffee and Cake on the Esplanade.

Raw Energy Mooloolaba  -Read my Review

We spotted a new place for dinner, there was not very many people there, the signage was rather small but it was a great spot on the esplanade for a cold drink and a meal.

After dinner we went for a walk down by the beach, then stayed in the for the night, needed to get a decent sleep as we are off to Australia Zoo Tomorrow.

5/10/07 Mooloolaba ---> Australia Zoo

kangaroo
Crickey! What a fun filled day, we were up and organized by 7 so we could go out for breakfast before we caught the bus, so after a strong coffee, and some cheap bacon and eggs from simply pies, we were off to the marina to get picked up.

We arrived at Australia zoo around 10am, and we were straight into it, Tigers, Crocodiles, Alligators, Wombats, Elephants, Birds, Turtles, Koalas,  Foxes... and so the list goes on. On my way to check out the baby tiger cubs, I saw a wombat, which the zoo keeper let me pat... it must have liked me because it tried to pooh on me... glad I had that coffee for my quick reflexes.

After a wander to see the Kangaroos and Koalas we met the Tiger cubs out for a walk.. they are gorgeous! It was an exciting morning, by the time lunch came, we were looking forward to it, although I worried about finding gluten free food, so packed a few gluten free bars in my bag just encase.

lucy eats croc

The afternoon we looked around the other animals, went to a show with snakes, crocodiles and birds, and by the end of the day were glad to have a sit down, a drink, and a rest.

It was Thai Takeaways for dinner as we could not be bothered cooking, which were delicious as always at the Thai Seasons Restaurant, and got a scoop of chips from down the road, which were not so fab.

Heading home tomorrow, will be both good and bad, need to catch up on some work, but also going to miss the beach, and nice atmosphere, the beautiful weather, and the good beaches!

06/10/07 Mooloolaba ----> Brisbane Airport

The Finale of my holiday, only a few more hours to be spent in Mooloolaba. After cramming my stuff into my bag, I ventured out in search of coffee... town was rather busy, so it was off to starbucks for a double shot soy caramel macchiato... YUM which I enjoyed overlooking the beach on a windy warm day.

Check out was at 10, so we stored our bags, then got some brunch to fill in the time while we waited for our bus to come at 12. It was off to Deco for brunch as they food was so good, and the place was so nice the other night.

I am sad to be leaving this beautiful weather, I sat in the sun with my bags while we awaited the bus, and now I am typing this up as I am sitting on the shuttle on my way back to Brisbane Airport.

--> We arrived at the airport safe and sound, so cruised around the shops, and had to fill in two hours. We decided we had better get some lunch as we would not get into New Zealand until 11 at night. The gluten free hunt was easier then I imaged, with a few more gluten free options.

And now back to New Zealand... And Back To Work

Hope You Enjoyed my Gluten Free Travel Story, If you have a great travel story of your own, why not share it.
