When i was first diagnosed as gluten free, I made the bad mistake of no ordering a gluten free meal, So I made do, avoiding extra sauces, not eating my bread, or cheesecake, or crackers on the plane... But gluten is sneaky, it was everywhere, And on a 27 Hour Flight from Christchurch To Sydney To Dubai To London...  Its not the best time to anger the tummy gods.  After this uncomfortable flying experience, I  vowed to always come prepared, and have learn t the best ways to insure a gluten free flight.  So here goes...

Order a Coeliac Meal

Most airlines will prepare a special meal for you, when you order a coeliac meal, Remember to book this with your travel agent, before you go to ensure you get the meal.

Try a Fruit Platter

If you are on a long journey, you are not really doing anything to burn off all the meals you may have, so a fruit plate can be an excellent gluten free choice.

Make sure you tell the Staff

Ensure you tell the staff that the gluten free meal is for you, this will help ensure they do not serve it up to someone else.

It Your Pre Ordered Meal Does Not Show Up

Preprepared a list of foods you can and cannot eat (this is one of the best things you can do when traveling) this way the wait staff will be able to narrow down the foods you will beadle to eat. I have heard of people doing this, and being sent up to first class to have a meal specially cooked for them.

Take a Snack

Take gluten free snacks with you, just ensure they are all eaten by the time you get to your destination, or disposed off, you do not want a nasty encounter with boarder patrol... or the hefty fine.

No Gluten Free Option With Your Airline?

Eat Before you go, If you are full, you are less likely to eat a regular meal which will upset your body.

Never Trust a Regular Meal

I know from experience trusting a regular meal is a bad idea, you can avoid things that obviously have wheat in them, but its used in so many things to thicken, or glue foods together... you are playing with fire if you do.
