Gluten in corn starch and yogurt?

by Susan
(Fl.)

I am just beginning a gluten free diet today and I'm wondering if things containing corn starch can be eaten? Also what about mayonnaise?

Thanks for any information....this is overwhelming...............Susan

Hey Susan,

Corn starch is fine - it is derived from form (you want to watch out for wheat, hydrolyzed wheat or gluten based products)

With regard to mayonnaise... it depends (things which have malt vinegar in them are a no no (malt is derived from barley which contains the gluten proteen).

The best advice I can give you is to read the labels - New Zealand brands are really improving with regard to labeling gluten free products. And there are plenty in NZ supermarkets.

Things to watch out for:
malt, barley, gluten, wheat, stocks (watch out eating soup or rissottos up sometimes there stock has wheat thickener in it) gravys and sauces.

(hydrolyzed wheat protein in shampoo and conditioners)

Maggi has just brought a range of gluten free sauces and gravys which are great and easy to use... using mainly corn thickener.
