How Do I Know If Its Gluten Free Vinegar?

by lucille riach

Hi there, when products list vinegar as an ingredient, do you assume that's its white vinegar, i.e. do they have to state if its malt? also I am confused about caramel?

Vinegar and Caramel NEW
by: Anonymous

I only eat products that say white vinegar and if it doesn't say what type of vinegar I don't buy it. I personally think if it doesn't say what type it is then it's more likely to be malt vinegar than white. My partner and I are both GF but he is hyper sensitive and in the past has had bad reactions to products with vinegar on the label that don't specify what type. That's why we now will not buy it unless certain it's white. I don't know what the food labelling rules are and if they have to say what kind of vinegar it is.

I am also confused about caramel colouring. Some products say caramel colouring derived from ....... (and then it says wheat or lists wheat related stuff) so you know not to buy it but what about the products that just say caramel, with no indications of it's caramel colouring origins? We need an experts advice on this I think!

Usually ok NEW

its usually white vinegar, supposedly it is GF but many people have issues with it still, my personal opinion on it is that its not gluten that gives the issues but the grain that it is made from carries over a bit in other ways. if should be marked malt vinegar if it is that.

as to carmel, if you mean color then in the US it is supposed to be GF but if its made out of the US or in another country it may or may not be safe

some people may have issues with something while you can eat it by the truck load and have no issues. just see what works for you, if you have questions and are out and about or cant afford any issues then error on the side of caution.
