how easy & expensive it is to source gluten free food for a five year old

We are in the UK and have a 5 yr old daughter diagnosed with Coeliacs earlier this year. She's now doing really well after a really rough ride.

Fingers crossed we are hoping to emigrate early next year & I'm trying to find out how easy & expensive it is to source tasty food for a five year old.

Over here we get all our bread & pasta on prescription luckily! Any help gratefully received.

Priciptions and gluten free food databases

Here is a link to a database that covers a wide range of procesed food for people alergys including Coeliacs www.mfd.co.nz, i find this extreamy helpfull, as it list nearly all food manufactuers in new zealand. you can all so access the database through you cellphone if you have G3 ability on it, which means i can check foods against the database while at the supermarke. As for geting food on priciption, yes, that is possable, but i beleve that it is only avaliable to NZ citerzins or perminat residents. Im not %100 shure about the rules and regulations, and your best checking with a NZ Doctor. Most major supermarkets now carry a range for gluten free products, and if they don't have a particular product most are more than happy to buy in a product, if not go find another super market.

I have to agree about the ability to get gluten free food in NZ. I have been gluten free for a few months and don't find it too hard.

The breads in general are a bit expensive and have the consistency of cardboard but if you toast them you can cope.

Most supermarkets have gluten free options now, and they have special sections just for GF food. I even saw some kids shaped pastas yesterday.

I think evenutally this site should, if used right, show you where you can get any gluten free eating options around the place.

What part of New Zealand are you moving to? I live in Christchurch, in the south island of new zealand and I have to say that eating gluten free in New Zealand and Australia is easy.

Pak n Save, Countdown, Freshchoice and New World Supermarkets all stock a good range of gluten free goods, breads and ingredients for baking.

I think New Zealand is years ahead of the curve when it comes to eating gluten free. (I have travelled to Dubia, America and London and found eating gluten free on the go to be very hard.
