How long does healing generally take?

by Anne
(Richmond, VA)

hi There!

I know you may not have a specific answer for me, but I have been gluten free for a week and am feeling no difference in my bloating and burping and chronic fullness. I have noticed improved energy, but the bloating really gets me down. I am never in the mood for a meal.

Have you heard of people not feeling better until a long time after they went gluten free? I am willing to stick with it even if it will take a while, but would just like to be "sure" that it will help me-- or at least a high probability that it will.

Every thing I read about it says people feel better within a few days or a week or two, but I am still muddling in indigestion.

The reason i am doing this is because I was diagnosed with gluten intolerance through enterolab.

I am anxious to start to feel better-- really don't like feeling FULL so much and having gas in my stomach all the time!

Thanks!

Anne

Hi Anne -

I recommend you try a low stress diet as it sounds like there is still something causing you allergies.

Personally I have now discovered I am highly allergic to gluten, intolerant to dairy, and suffer from sensitivity to sugar... it took me a while to weed out the culprits but I feel better for this

Here is some more information on the low stress diet for you.

http://www.glutenfreekiwi.com/low-stress-diet.html

basically it involves cutting out all the foods that could be causing stress on your body, then slowly introducing them one by one to see which ones cause problems and which ones are ok.

I hope this helps

Good luck

It Depends
by: Anonymous

Since I discovered my gluten intolerance, I've done a lot of research on the internet, because I'm as anxious as the next person to see my symptoms disappear. However, it hasn't been as uplifting as I'd like. The best I can find, states it can take anywhere from 2 to 10 years (!) depending on how old you were when you were finally diagnosed. On another medical website, I read that the bowel may take up to 12 months to heal. So basically I think that as long as we are eating gluten free, our bodies have begun the healing process. If you're into natural alternatives, Slippery Elm is supposed to be very healing for the digestive system. I'm taking that and probiotics.

Good luck!

Be Positive
by: Jan Arnold

Hi,

Healing seems to take about six weeks, and there are many hidden gluten containing products. My bloating took a while to subside but as soon as I added a daily Thompsons Multidophilus tablet I started to feel a lot better...it seems to help the healing process by use of the good bacteria.
Watch for wheat sugars now found in some jams and lemonade drinks. Use only cane sugars.Good luck, be positive and you will win in the end believe me.

Hang in there
by: Anonymous

Hi there, it took me about a month of gluten free before I started to feel consistently better. I would have good days and then days when I felt it was making no difference but after a month or so the difference to how i felt was very noticable. Now after about 6 months if i inadvertently eat something with gluten in it only takes 2-4 days to recover. Hang in there, it's worth it

It might be more than gluten
by: Lesley

Hiya

I had that, and found it was not just gluten, but also starch and sugar.

I still eat it sometimes but I choose to pay the price. I would get an allergy test done.

Cheers
