How Many Gluten Intolerant People Have Other Allergies?

by gluten free kiwi

Do you suffer from allergies on top of your gluten intolerance or Coeliac Disease?

I have sensitivity to dairy... although I wonder if I am in denial that I am actually allergic to it.

I was just wondering how many other people stuffer from other allergies on top of gluten.

Egg, Nuts, Dairy, Casein, sulphides, animals, .... And so the list goes on.

Does anyone else feel like they have been hit with the allergy stick!

Allergies

Yes, I have some allergies and intolerances. Where to start...diagnosed with Celiac just over 2 years ago. Took out most dairy (not cheese or yogurt) shortly after that. Some of us have so much intestinal damage from gluten that the part of the intestine that produces lactase, the enzyme necessary to break down the sugar in milk, is damaged. My dietician said that I can try to slowly introduce more dairy to my diet after allowing my gut to heal while on a gf diet, so I have been trying that. I can have a bit of ice cream (hooray!) and I take a bit of milk in my coffee.
Years before I was diagnosed with Celiac, I had issues with allergies. Penicillin, certain plants and animals. There are some bath products and shampoos I can't use. I got used to the allergies to toiletries as I've dealt with that for many years. Having celiac now and being extremely sensitive to it has at times been like the "straw that broke the camel's back".
I'm also tired of people who seem to think I'm overly cautious about what I put in my mouth or near what I or my daughter will eat. (My daughter is 10, she also has celiac)
Nice to know there are others with similar struggles!
Regards,
Liz

Gluten, eggs and no more sugar!
by: Laura

I underwent blood tests and found that I have allergies to sugar, eggs, cows milk and gluten. My first reaction was pretty shocked especially at the thought of no more eggs...i have been gluten free for several weeks now but to have eggs and sugar added to the list permanently was going to take some serious changes. I would love to hear how others handle this type of change....

Yes!
by: Katrina

I got diagnosed with coeliacs last year. And have issues with dairy (i can tolerate a little yoghurt & cheese). So I have soy milk. Eggs upset me too now. I can have something baked with egg in it but scrambled egg upsets me.
And now I seem to be having itching problems all over so am changing soaps, shampoos etc.
I'm having a 'had enough week!'
And would like to just be normal!

Allergies

I found out just over 3 years ago I was allergic to wheat - not coeliac. This has taken a huge lifestyle change which I am now used to but earlier this year I found out I am allergic to casein. This means no dairy, including cheese, yoghurt, sour cream or such. This has been particularly difficult to cope with but I do find total avoidance pays huge dividends (health-wise) and when I feel strong enough to avoid wheat and dairy I do feel much better for it but occasionally I crave for "normal" food.
