Interesting Outcome - Starch and Sugar Intolerance

by Lesley
(Wellington)

Hiya all

I know I have written before about all my probs. I just want you all to know I went to Will Aitken of Wellington Osteopaths because I was at my wits end. Will did muscle testing and kinesiology.

He determined I have a starch and sugar intolerance in addition to a gluten intolerance. He explained how all my growing symptoms were a build up of toxins in the body and gave me a plan to follow. I thought I was going mad because going GF just wasnt fixing all the problems and I was still exhausted.

Following my visit to Will, I took his advice and gave up all starches and sugars. Right now its just protein and vegetables with a little bit of fruit.

I cant believe the one symptom that is quickly disappearing was one I didn't know was a symptom. For the longest time my feet have been getting more and more painful, and my legs and hips have quickly been following along with a very tight back.

In less than a week I can walk freely, with little or no pain. Absolutely unheard of!! I have been hobbling for ages, specially when I have been at rest. My feet are no longer swollen. In less than a week my face has started changing shape and is going down.

I cant tell you how happy this makes me. I know its a pretty radical diet, but wow its really worth it!

starch free
by: Jane

We have been gluten, starch and sugar free for some time now. The physical and psychological problems that are now gone are too many to list. (don't think "oh she doesn't know me")It's a difficult diet when first starting but you learn new favorites. Knowing the problems that you're not dealing with anymore far outweighs eating a donut. It's not to say we don't cheat. You know your body and what you can handle with the least problems so that you can cheat once in a while. I have spit something out in the wastebasket if it I didn't think it was worth it! Our lives have changed significantly. There's not enough time or room for me to write all the advantages we have seen. In Dr Lonsdales book "Why I Left Orthodox Medicine" (this was the first book I found that I felt addressed our problems) he feels he could take this diet into youth detention facilities and change the biggest percentage of the population. Hang in there! It's so worth it.

Interested in Starch and Sugar Free GF approaches

I am responding to your post. I am afraid that it would take all day to try to respond to your questions. They are good questions. They are questions that other people have asked. I am afraid that I don't have all the answers. I don't know of anyone who does.

If you haven't done so already, I would suggest that you read my other posts on this page. You can also try reading the original book by Elaine Gottschall about the SCD diet. There are now some other recipe books on the market that help with the practical end of things. (As well as web support.) I don't know how good the new books are with the theory part.

http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Vicious-Cycle-Intestinal-Through/dp/0969276818/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1309113887&sr=8-2

The diet is not easy, but I am convinced that it can bring significant help to some people. If you have some energy, time, and money to throw at it and you are willing to give it a try, what I advocate is giving the diet a real (strict) trial for a period of time. If there is a clear before and after for you, all of your intellectual questions may not be resolved, but you will have obtained the benefit. You may find yourself on the road to becoming a "believer". If this is really not your problem, then a trial will produce only a few more unanswered questions and an addition to what is probably a long list of attempts at things that didn't really work so well for you.

If you wait to have all your questions answered before taking the pragmatic route and trying out the diet, you may be waiting for a long time. The same may be said about practitioners. Not many people are really paying attention. As long as you are not too stressed out already and you are of sound mind (if not of sound body)then I don't really see the harm of undertaking a serious trial, provided that there are some preliminary indicators that this may be your problem. Think it through. Get your ducks lined up before starting so that it has a chance to be a real trial. Some people find that they are very glad that they tried it.

I have had gut and numerous other problems since early childhood. Yet gluten and dairy are clearly my worst enemies. I need to read more re the starchsugar intolerance. All the info I read on autoimmune diseases is choppy, too unrelated, and disconnected to make sense. Isn't the leaky gut the cause of all these problems? The starch intolerance, at least. What about enzyme deficiencies? What about the most recent genetic tests to test for the celiac gene? Are you suggesting this is all bogus? Or that it might be the gene for starch intolerance given the necessary circumstances. What about all of these things stemming form the industrial ages' damage to our food and food sources, couped with the right- orwrong- genetics? What about white flour being the culprit? Not all starches and sugars? What further research do you have to explain all of this? Why would the specific carbohydrate diet be rejected ???How can people truly be tested for all or even some of this? Are there any DR.'s on the east coast of the US who can help with this? What about Norhtern VA, MD. and DC? Thanks, RED

starch & sugar free: end of depression
by: Anonymous

Wow! I've been starch & sugar free for over a year now. I've been doing the SCD but can still only handle a couple veggies. I'm following Pecanbread's suggestions for introducing veggies.

I'm no longer suffer from depression, which has haunted me since early childhood. It vanished 36 hours after becoming starch & sugar free. Wow!

Originally diagnosed celiac, the gluten-free diet helped but I was still sick and still dying. Little did I suspect that all my life carbohydrate intolerance was making me depressed.

Symptoms addressed by the SCD starch & sugar free diet: depression, anxiety, anger, potbelly, belching, gas, bloat, abdominal pain, constipation !!!, joint pain, night sweats, insomnia, insatiable hunger - that so-called "high metabolism" vanished, and most of the neuropathy.

I feel inner peace for the first time in my life.

I believe that I was born this way: not well adapted to carbs, like our paleolithic forebears.

I feel peace.

Gluten Free, Sugar Free, Starch Free
by: Catherine Savard

Julie,

Expense is definitely one of the difficulties of this type of diet. It is not a cheap way to go. The description of meat, eggs, and watery vegetables that grow above the ground is one way to roughly describe a caveman type diet. It is controversial. It is difficult. It seems to help some and not others.

Here is a link with a summary that leads to other links about the specific carbohydrate diet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_Carbohydrate_Diet

It is important to add to the description in the above paragraph that a specially cultivated goat's milk is permitted as are some cheeses, nuts and honey. Such elements widen the horizons of the diet considerably. It is possible to gain a general understanding of what this approach is about and to find recipes on the web in order to figure out how to adapt to this special way of cooking.

A lot of attention has to be paid to ingredients, planning and preparation. Prepared gluten free foods will generally not conform at all to this kind of diet, so you end up spending a lot of time in the kitchen making things yourself.(Gluten free prepared products are more about taste and convenience and feeling like you are "not missing out". Unfortunately, they take you in the exact opposite direction to the one recommended by this SCD diet. The SCD diet exceeds the requirements of a GF diet for those who find that being gluten free is not really enough.)

In spite of the difficulties, depending on how desperate your health situation is and how many other things you have looked into by this point, this kind of approach may still be worth checking out. You probably won't know until and unless you have a real trial period with it. This particular approach does not employ a lot of supplements which can be expensive (I won't say that supplements are unhelpful.) It has been pointed out that the special cultivated goat's milk yoghurt may have a significant role in normalizing the gut without the use of a "designer" probiotic whipped up in sombebody's lab.

I don't have answers about how to make the approach work on a very limited income, but I would suggest that it is necessary to have an accurate understanding of the approach if you do decide to try it so that you don't waste time, energy and money on it. An incorrect application of the method will not tell you what you need to know about whether the approach will help or not.

A helpful mentality I would think would be to say, "I have to eat something. I have to spend money on eating something. Why not see if there are choices about what I am eating that can make a difference?"

Sugar/starch free
by: Anonymous

Hi Lesley,
This was interesting reading. We had eliminated gluten and lactose from my daughters diet, but she was still very sick. Totally unconnected I decided to do the 'Atkins' diet for weight loss. Daughter (very skinny, underweight) wanted to join in. I said no (she's underweight) she said "but I think i can eat this way". Well she was right. Meat, eggs, and watery above ground veg, and she is symptom free. She also began to put ON weight!

We are going to see Dr Ford in Chch in 10 days time.

When gluten free is not enough: sugar and starch intolerance
by: Catherine Savard

Like Lesley and others I have met, being gluten free seems to help my health problems, but being starch and sugar free makes a big difference. I get fatigue, fibromyalgia-like pain, headaches, gut problems, skin rashes and other things. A recent re-introduction of milk products after a 20 year absence was not successful. I can still tolerate 24hour cultured goat milk yoghurt. There is a whole other school of thought about celiac disease which I have found to be more helpful for myself and my daughter which incorporates an attention to sugar and starch difficulties.(I have found other aspects to be involved as well.) What I can say after several years of experimentation and observation is that it simply works better for me and for some others and that lots of people(slow or non-responders) are probably suffering needlessly because it is not commonly acknowledged in the celiac community.

Thank you and request for help
by: Dawn

Reading your info made great sence. I have been gluten free but still have problems, which I put down to fruit acids ( in fruit juice etc.) as this always gives me gut problems. I have constant lower back and hip pain with no "physical" reason, so I would love to know what your diet includes/excludes so I can give it a go. Also how did he test for this? I have heard about a hydrogen breath test but don't know who offers this in Wellington. Please contact Dawn on ditchburn@kol.co.nz.
