First thing you need to ask is
What is Maltodextrin?
Well it is a common food additive (that I seem to be discovering in more and more of my favorite packages foods!) which is a type of sugar that is made when you break down starch.
Although it is does not made from malt its gluten free status is entirely based on what kind or starch it came from e.g wheat, corn, tapioca, rice, potato.
How do I know where the Maltodextrin came from
Usually in the:
United States its made from rice, corn and potato.
Europe it is made from wheat
Australia it is made from wheat
I am finding it increasingly hard to find out about its source in Asian, Oriental and New Zealand made products.
Maltodextrin
It is a pain that the derivatives of gluten free products do not have to be stated I have been eating a product which states "gluten free" on the label but has been leaving me feeling a little itchy and "brain fogged" after eating it or the next day.
Does anyone have any idea about the status of NZ maltodextrin or if we import it from a certain country?
Anyway there is my rant for the day... the gluten made me grump :/
