Is there gluten in products containing salt?
by Suzie Stocker
(Nelson, NZ)
When I check out the NZ Allergy Data Base and look under the Snack food category I find only Freedom Foods
POTATO CHIPS - NO ADDED SALT. Does this mean that all other (unflavoured but salted) brands are not gluten free? Thanks, Suzie

Hey Suzie - It most likely means it has not been updated in a while. It really depends on the potato chip manufacturer.
e.g. - 1. Do they mix wheat/gluten into the potato mix like pringles. 2. Is there wheat/gluten in the flavoring on the chip e.g. salt and vinegar. 3. Is there wheat as a filler or thickening agent. 4. Are they milled in the same plant as gluten containing cereals.
There is no hard and fast rule - your best option is to read the packet as it varies from chip to chip. I have found that gluten can also be hidden in food additives like maltodextrin (msg which can be derived from seaweed).
I normally eat those kettle chips in ready salted flavour - I can not verify there gf status, but they appear to have 3 ingredients salt, potato and canola oil.
Hope this helps. Lucy The Gluten Free Kiwi
