Phoebe's Itchy & Scratchy Journey
by Jules
(Christchurch)
Gluten Rash
It was the day after Phoebe's 2nd birthday when she woke with a head to foot rash. It was on the palms of her hands and the soles of her feet as well as everywhere else. We were scared that it was meningitis but, upon visiting a doctor who had a few coeliac patients, we were sent for blood tests.
Her IgG's came back high and we entered her results into the Doctor Gluten website and they sent back an email saying that she was gluten sensitive.
We instantly went gluten free for her and her mood improved, she started gaining weight, her bowel motions were more consistent instead of being loose, explosive and HUGE!!
She also used to get a really sore windy tummy. After a couple of months she had a bread binge. She climbed up on the rubbish bin and helped herself to it and she got really unwell. She had huge rings under eyes, lost weight and covered in a hive like rash (see photo).
We finally went and saw Rodney Ford last month and he has said she needs to be very careful about all things including playdough, shampoos, soaps etc.
Our biggest hindrance is finding that things that were gluten free have been changed to help the cheaper recipe eg Pascall Marshmallows!!
