Soy /Tamari sauce

by Lesley
(New Zealand)

I am recently diagnosed, so doing lots of homework.
I need to check if Pams soy sauce is GF... there seems to be shortage of soy sauces that are GF. Nearest supplier appears to be Mosgiel at an order-on-line site.

Also, would Home Brand peanut butter from Countdown be GF...

-----------

Soy sauce - is not gluten free how ever in the Asian section of your supermarket you will find a product called Tamari. You need to check the labels, but you may find it very hard to find a product called "soy sauce" which is gluten free.

Fermentation NEW
by: Anonymous

Apparently the fermentation process breaks down the gluten in wheat. However, there's only one website
that claims to have tested this, and it's very pro-soy. Still, worth a read:

Sweet and sour sauce and marinade NEW
by: lESLEY

Re the sauce issue, on surfing the net I found out that the Jellico sweet and sour and marinades are all GF. Sent for a 1L of the sweet and sour, I think from memory $6.70 a litre, and around $6 to post it and arrived the next day. Tastes absolutely like the real thing and will be very economical as well. They do other products and have a very good website.

I think Pam's soy is GF NEW
by: Anonymous

I have also been wondering about the Pams soy sauce as it doesn't list any gluten-containing ingredients. Even so I am afraid to use it as we are told not to eat any soy sauces (only Tamari).

fountain soy sauce is GF NEW
by: Anonymous

Fountain Soy sauce is gluten free but not wheat free, it is available in Australia not sure about NZ. In Australia also you can get a gluten free Worcestershire sauce made by Spring Gully it is slighly sweeter than Holbrooks but is very yummy.

Pams Soy sauce NEW
by: Anonymous

We've used Pams Soy Sauce without any reactions. It's the only gluten free soy sauce I've found... except the $10 at Barrington Fresh Choice.

We tend to find the "home brands" are often gluten free as it's cheaper to use cornflour than wheat flour!.
However, I'm constantly reading and re-checking labels for gluten ingredients.

Gluten comes to bite NEW
by: Lesley (another Lesley)

Hi Lesley

I will second those other comments. I dont ever buy any food without checking for gluten products. Unfortunately I learned the hard way that there are no short cuts to good health.

Beware of malto dextrin, anything with barley, and all soy sauces. I use Tamari sauce also. You really cant tell much difference.

You may not immediately be able to feel the effects of eating gluten right now, but if you do what I do and live in denial, it will happen one day gradually and boy you will pay.

I have had to give up gluten, starch, sugar, dairy coffee and alcohol. Its joyful, let me tell ya LOL

Label reading NEW
by: Sylvia

Hi Lesley

It sounds as if you need advice on reading labels. Your dietician should be able to help you with this. Not everything that we coeliacs can eat is labelled gluten free but you need to learn to read the labels to ascertain what 'normal' products are OK for you to eat and what are not. Also if you look at www.mfd.co.nz you will find a reasonably comprehensive list of 'normal' foods that are OK for Coeliacs to consume. It is not definitive but it is an excellent guide. The Coeliac Society of NZ provides all of it's members with a printed copy.
