Travel to New Zealand with gluten intolerant son

by Brigs moore
(California, USA)

I will be visiting New Zealand for two weeks with my five year old son, who is gluten intolerant. I was wondering how much of his gluten free food (bread, pasta, treats) that I should pack.

Are gluten free products readily available there? What is the name of a good grocery store that carries gluten free products?

We will be starting the trip in Auckland and leaving from Christchurch. Any information or feedback you can give would be much appreciated.

I would rather not have to bring a suitcase of food with us. Thanks,
Brigid

Thank you everyone!! I never expected such good feedback. I am greatly relieved to find I will not have to pack a suitcase full of food for my son.

New Zealand Is Very Friendly To Gluten Intolerant People
by: Gluten Free Kiwi

Hi,

You are in luck as New Zealand to the most part is pretty easy to eat gluten free.

Cafes usually have a few gluten free cake options and there are food chains such as burger fuel, hell pizza, spags - that have gluten free buns and bases.

Supermarkets usually have a gluten free section.

I find eating gluten free in New Zealand to be pretty easy. I really struggled when traveling in the states on holiday a few years ago.

You can find cafes and places to eat in NZ by region/city on this site.

I am from Christchurch and I have found most big cities in NZ to be gluten free friendly. (sometimes smaller towns you struggle but there is always a supermarket)

Hope this helps

Heaps of Options
by: Nikki Stanton

Most super markets will have GF options available and many restaurants will be able to have options too. Take aways not so easy, but some pizza outlets and ethnic foods are good.

We have a number of bakeries that do GF goodies as well. Try the coeliac NZ site as they have useful into too.

Gluten free shopping in NZ
by: Tania

Hi,

When you arrive at Auckland Airport, there is a supermarket called Countdown as you leave and they should have a range of cereals, breads, pasta and baked goods.

Here is a link showing a map.

There is another supermarket chain called New World and they also stock a wide range of gluten-free products.

Enjoy your holiday :-)
