Wheat free vs Gluten Free

This maybe a very 'blonde' question.. But I recently found out that I have a wheat allergy, (am also vegan, so it's all a bit overwhelming..), are all gluten-free products also wheat free? I'm gathering that not all wheat free products are gluten free.. but all gluten free is wheat free?

Yes I agree most foods/drinks that are gluten free wheat free. I like an occasional alcoholic beverage - distilled vodka which most gluten free people can drink is often made from wheat (unless it specifically says - made from potatoes). I have a wheat allergy not necessarily gluten and distilled vodka or other distilled (gluten-free) items that are made from wheat (pickles) do not sit well with me. Be careful -- anything that contains distilled vinegar could be made from wheat and could bother the wheat allergic person.

You will find gluten not only in wheat but also in oats, barley, rye and spelt (which is really a strain of wheat). So if you are intolerant to gluten best avoid all of these. Some people are intolerant to the wheat for other reasons than the gluten and can eat the other glutenous grains. Not for coeliacs though. Those with less severe intolerance may be able to tolerate a little oats, while others cannot tolerate any trace of gluten at all without severe adverse effects. It is such a personal thing.
