Heavy metal in Gluten ree bread WARNING
by: Anonymous

I have some alarming information about how both Vogels and Burgens gluten free bread have four scary heavy metals in them. The product they use caled e464 or 464, which is meant to make gluten free bread nice and light and add volume, contains ARSENIC, LEAD, MERCURY AND CADMIUM.
As well as this e464 being used in foods it is also used in, but not limited to:

Tile Adhesives
Cement renders
Gypsum products
Pharmaceutical
Paints & Coatings
Cosmetics
Detergents & cleaners
Eye Drops

In 2007 Vogels, with the intention of getting in on the growing gluten free market, hired an indian student from the Auckland University of Technology to do a thesis on gluten free bread which was used by this student to partially fulfil the requiremnts for his degree. He was required to come up with a cost effective recipe that would be able to be used in standard bread machinery. The use of this dubious product enabled the dough, at a cheap price, to preform very much like wheat bread on the production line and the final loaf preformed very much like wheat bread when consumed. Unfortunately the 464 (HPMC) is an easy way of acheiving an effect that other more health concious gluten free bread companies spend a good deal of time with the use of expensive quality ingredients to acheive.

Burgen and Vogels now pride themselves on their Gluten free bread range whilst unaware or maybe just unconcerned on the heath effects on the human body due to the heavy metals in this product. Gluten free bread companies who are concerned about what they put in their bread will have a more expensive loaf due to the hands on approach but the health benefits will no doubt be cheaper for the customer in the long run because of the they will not need medical intervention due to symtoms of heavy metal residue and loss of lifes enjoyment due to ill health.

Bread
by: Deidre

Hi - I have a Panasonic breadmaker that I use for this recipe (http://www.healtheries.co.nz/page.php?id=4&rcp=83) - I use the 3rd recipe down with the egg. It is made using the Simple Bread Mix and as well as being the tastiest bread, it is the easiest and cheapest to make (that I have found so far!!.

make your own GF Bread
by: Anonymous

If you want to make your own Gluten free bread Basco has a great one that you only have to add water and an egg, no need for a bread maker. It is moist and is great for sandwiches on day one and maybe day two and then great as toast, it is more like bread than cake, like some can be.
I have been told that Laucke have a good gluten free bread mix aswell but this one requires a bit more mucking around. But is meant to be great for sandwiches.

new to it
by: Marilyn

I quickly found the best:

Venerdi (www.venerdi.co.nz) list of many, many stockists around the country. Their six seed bread is divine. All their bread varieties are great.

Marx Bakery in St Heliers where you can get bread, rolls, hamburger buns etc. Superb.

Thoroughbread in Kapiti, yet to learn exactly where, carrot and fennel bread to die for.

Pak n Save Bread
by: Sylvia

The New World In Thorndon bakes and sells the same product so no need to trip all the way to Paraparaumu. Probably all the Pak n Saves and New Worlds do it. But I know that Thorndon only does it on some days. They advise that you phone first to make sure you go on the right day/s. Having said that though it still tastes like cardboard compared with the Thoroughbread. She does do a plain loaf with Poppyseeds on top for those who can't cope with the thought of her more exotic flavours. And it's only the thought that would put you off. Her bread is just delicious and the flavour is blended so that you recognise that there is a different taste but you probably wouldn't identify that there was carrot and fennel in there apart from maybe the colour. In the Walnut one there are definitely walnut chunks to see but the herb/garlic gives it more flavour

Pak N Save Paraparaumu Rocks
by: Blair

Hi There,

I know how you feel with finding bread, there is more and more coming out, but its either weird (Carrot and Fennel) or just looks and tastes like cake. BUT Pak n Save Paraparaumu came to the rescue and offer a Plain or Cheese loaf. No other Pak n Saves do it. Both are as close to normal bread as you will get with GF. Pricey at $4.98 a loaf, but well worth the trip up there to get it.

The Best GF Bread in Wellington
by: Sylvia

In Wellington the best bread to buy is to go to the market in Victoria Street on a Sunday morning. A lady comes down from the Southern Hawkes Bay, I think. She grinds her own flours and makes and sells only Gluten Free bread. Her brand is Thoroughbread and she has several different, yummy flavours. My favourite is Carrot and Fennel. This week I bought Walnut, Herb and Garlic as well. Its the only bread I have had that I haven't felt compelled to toast before making a sandwich. The bread is so good she even suplies some local cafes and restaurants. Ernestos is one that I am aware of that uses it. She won't be at the market this weekend (Anniversary Weekend) but is always there except on a holiday weekend.

Easy to find
by: Lesley

Hiya

As above, I cant fault that list. The Vernerdi bread comes in a nutty one that I just love. I agree about toasting it. I have personally all but given up bread now because Im having starch issues and not 100% sure what to eat any more LOL

You can get GF at New World, health shops, Countdown and Woolies. As far as I know Pak N Save doesnt do GF bread. They are very main stream.

Woolies & New World have it in the main bread section. Countdown, I think have it with the health stuff.

Good luck

Gluten Free Bread That Does Not Crumble
by: Gluten free Kiwi

Hi There,

This is a very valid statement about gluten free bread. After almost 3 years of being gluten free here are my bread tips.

1.) Better From Frozen - One of the big things with gluten free bread is it seems to go off much faster and looses moisture to become dry and crumbly within a day.

2.)Fresh Is Best - Find out what day they bake at your local supermarket or bakery and buy it on that day - put it straight in the freezer and toast from frozen.

3.) Always Toast it - I have never been a butter or margarine fan - but gluten free bread (unless fresh) needs to be toasted or even microwaves - heating it seems to help stop the crumbly factor.) I like to toast mine with a little pesto or olive oil on top.

4.) Veridi (i think that is how you spell it) make amazing bread rolls called BAPS there what burger fuel use as their buns and taste excellent. They also make a rice bread which is pretty tasty - a little dense - I like to have a piece with an egg in the morning - good straight from the freezer to the toaster.

5.)Dovedale China bread - This stuff is great - I buy mine at pak n save or fresh choice. Talked to the marketing manager at the gluten free expo and they have a number of gluten free breads (beware not the whole brand is so read labels).

6.) Gluten Free breadmakers - there is a lady in Christchurch who makes a brand of breadmix called Zero-g (zero-g.co.nz) this is THE BEST gluten free breadmix I have ever had, very realistic to normal bread, and had seeds and grains which was nice for a change.

That's all I can think or for now - the KB's bakery in Christchurch does gluten free bread as well - I am not sure about the rest of the new zealand so it could be worth making a phone call.

Hope that helps - I think the key is warmth to help the crumble factor - and density varies across brands).
